  • Approving the project of intercropping, raising livestock under the cashew canopy 05/18/2023

    May 18th, 2023

Up to now, Binh Phuoc is the province with the largest cashew acreage in the country. After 15 years of implementing the project of planning the cashew industry in Binh Phuoc province for the period 2006-2020 according to the Decision No. 31/2008/QD-UBND dated July 8, 2008 of the Provincial People's Committee, the province's cashew productivity and output continuously increased over the years. In 2017, the cashew area was about 134,302 ha, yield 0.73 tons/ha, yield 96,813 tons. By 2021, the area will reach 141,595ha, yield 1.49 tons/ha. In 2022, the area is 151,892ha, yield 1.15 tons/ha, output 170,358 tons. Cashew tree is one of the main crops of the province. However, the development of the cashew industry still has a number of shortcomings and limitations. Many cashew growing areas have not been planned, still spontaneous and scattered. The proportion of households cultivating extensive cashew with old varieties is quite common, while the number of households growing intensive cashew cultivation is not much. Therefore, the economic efficiency from cashew trees is not high. Most cashew trees are grown as monocultures, with limited productivity, high damage rate, and high risk when diseases arise or when there are fluctuations in market prices. Production linkages along the value chain are still limited, mainly in a few concentrated growing areas. The majority of cashew growers and processing plants have not yet signed product sales contracts, leading to a situation of competing for purchase and sale and lack of initiative in supplying raw materials to processing plants in the area. In addition, in recent years, Unusual weather causes unseasonal rains, tornadoes, pests and diseases that cause damage to yield and product quality. Economic efficiency from cashew trees is not high and there is a big difference between localities. On the other hand, it is difficult for cashew trees in the province to compete with some other crops with higher economic efficiency such as coffee, pepper, rubber, fruit trees... In order to improve production efficiency from cashew trees, intercropping and rearing under the canopy is an appropriate solution to take advantage of the space under the cashew canopy; increase income on the same area, help increase competitiveness with other crops, contribute to diversify agricultural products, reduce risks due to price fluctuations and pests compared to monoculture systems. .. The construction of the project of intercropping and raising livestock under the cashew canopy is necessary, helping to improve the economy for cashew farmers, and at the same time contributing to the successful implementation of Resolution No. 11-NQ/TU dated 15/15/ April 2020 of the Standing Board of the Provincial Party Committee on the development of Binh Phuoc cashew industry in the period of 2020-2025 and a vision to 2030. Accordingly, the project strives to, by 2025, the total area of intercropping/multi-cropping under the cashew canopy in the whole province is 10,000 ha as proposed by Resolution No. 11/NQ-TU. Of which, Bu Dang district 8,000 ha, Bu Gia Map district 1,000 ha, the remaining 1,000 ha of districts, towns and cities. Plants identified as intercropping/polyculture under cashew canopy include: Coffee, cocoa, medicinal plants; livestock under the cashew canopy: Chicken, duck, goat. By 2030, increase the area of intercropping/multi-cropping under the cashew canopy in the whole province to 5,000ha, equivalent to a cumulative 15,000ha. Of which, Bu Dang district 10,000 ha, Bu Gia Map district 3,000 ha, the remaining 2,000 ha of districts, towns and cities. Plants identified as intercropping/polyculture under cashew canopy include: Coffee, cocoa, medicinal plants; livestock under the cashew canopy: Chicken, duck, goat. The project focuses on organizations and individuals who grow intercropping/multi-cropping, and raise livestock under the cashew canopy. Along with that, implementing in 11 districts, towns and cities in the province. Funding for project implementation from the state budget shall comply with budget management decentralization; resources integrated with the assigned programs and projects in the year (the capital from the people, participating enterprises and other legal sources of mobilization and funding as prescribed). The Provincial People's Committee assigned the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to be the lead agency, and coordinate with other departments, agencies, People's Committees of districts, towns and cities to organize the implementation of this project in the province; formulating and implementing programs and project contents according to regulations; building models of intercropping, breeding under the cashew canopy, production linkage models for sustainable development; synthesize, monitor, inspect and urge the implementation process.
